Laurence Spicher
Swiss · 2002
Born in Switzerland in 2002, Laurence Spicher lives and works between Maggia and Basel. A graduate of the Visual Arts School Basel, his artistic practice is rooted in a lifelong engagement with painting, moving between portraiture and abstraction to explore perception, memory, and the relationship between humanity and nature. Introduced to art at an early age through his father, artist Stephan Spicher, Laurence grew up surrounded by exhibitions, paintings, and artistic dialogue. Early encounters with the work of Vincent van Gogh and Claude Monet left a lasting impression, shaping his understanding of color, atmosphere, and observation. Working across portraiture and abstraction, Spicher approaches painting as a process of reflection and discovery. His portraits examine the connection between artist and subject, while his abstract works draw inspiration from the landscapes of Ticino, transforming familiar elements of nature into spaces for contemplation and renewed perception. Influenced by artists such as Monet, Rembrandt, and Marlene Dumas, Spicher draws from both the traditions of European painting and a contemporary sensibility. His works invite viewers to look closely at the familiar and reconsider the ways in which we experience the world around us.
